How to Make Pellets
If you want to know how to make pellets or wood pellets for fuel, if you are interested in the pelleting process of how to make wood pellets, this is the right place to begin.
There are three main aspects you should pay attention, they are materials, pellet mills and pelletizing process in wood pellet making.
Materials of Wood Pellet Fuel:
As we all know, wood or logs can be made into wood pellets, however, a more surprising secret is that a wide variety of biomass raw materials can also be produced to pellets fuel. These possible materials include straw, sawdust, grass, paper, corn cobs & stalks, bagasse, peanut shell etc. The common rule of thumb is that as long as the chosen biomass raw material can be cut into proper small granular form, you can use it to make pellets. As a result, a lot of more potential materials could be used and produce exellent results.
Depending on the scale you are making pellets, there are two plans for your reference.
If you're making pellets on a small scale just for home or residential & farm use, usually a pellet mill or press is enough. Typically, homemade wood or biomass pellets are made in small pellet mill or you can say homemade pellet mill or flat die pellet mill. However, according to the size of the raw material, you may also need to use a small hammer mill if needed.
Some other pieces of equipment except pellet mill are needed if you produce pellets on a large scale for industrial or commercial use instead of for home use. To name just a few of them, hammer mills, dryers, coolers, packing machines etc.
Pelletizing Process of Wood Pellets Fuel:
First, if the raw material is larger than 1/4", it should be broken down in the hammer mill to a smaller particle size.
Secondly, dry the materials in a dryer up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit to get rid of moisture. The favorite pelletizing moisture content is about 13%-15%.
Third, put the substance through a pellet mill or press. The machine will squeeze through a die that has holes. Then pellets will be produced. Keep high pressure on the pellets. Make sure the press machine remains at a high pressure so it will ensure the wood to soften lignin (a natural bonding substance) and hold the pellet together naturally.
Then, The temperature and moisture content of wood pellet is usually much higher after pelleting. In this situation, you need a cooler to reduce pellets temperature and moisture content for better storage purpose.
Last but not least, you need a packing machine to pack your pellets to stop them from getting damp for better storage.
From all above information, you may have exactly known how to make wood pellets and the necessary process of how to make kinds of pellets.
